Completed in 2017, this portrait series by Luke Haynes explores the narrative power embedded within quilt-making, clothing, and representation. Using his signature fabric portraiture technique, Haynes invited members of the Seattle community into his studio to be photographed—capturing each subject in the clothing they wore during their sitting. He then transformed those very garments into their quilted portraits, creating deeply personal works that fused image, material, and identity.
While Haynes always works with second-hand textiles, this series emphasized the intimate stories carried within the fabrics we wear. Through this process, he illuminated the layered relationship between personhood, memory, and material—positioning quilts not only as comfort objects, but as living archives.
